Frequently Asked Questions

What Services Does a Notary Public in England Offer?

A Notary Public plays a crucial role in the legal and administrative landscape of England. Whether you're an individual managing personal affairs or a business engaging in international transactions, notarial services ensure your documents are recognised and accepted abroad. This guide explores the full range of services offered by a Notary Public in England, tailored to meet the needs of both private individuals and commercial clients.

Who Is a Notary Public?

A Notary Public is a legally qualified professional whose primary duty is to authenticate and certify documents for use overseas. Unlike solicitors or barristers, notaries are specifically trained to deal with international legal requirements. They are appointed and regulated by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury and must adhere to rigorous professional standards.

Why Choose a Notary Public?

The key advantages of using a Notary Public include:

International Recognition: Documents notarised in England by a Notary Public are widely accepted across jurisdictions.

Professional Oversight: Notaries are rigorously regulated and must carry professional indemnity insurance.

Efficiency: A notary ensures your documents are correct, properly executed, and fully compliant with the destination country’s requirements.

How Much Do Notarial Services Cost?

Fees can vary depending on:

  • The type and number of documents
  • Whether legalisation (apostille or consular) is required
  • Urgency and location (e.g., in-office or mobile service)
  • The complexity of verification or drafting

A clear quotation will be provided in advance, and all notaries are required to publish their fees or pricing policy.

If the matter is simple, I will endeavour to charge a fixed fee to include all disbursements.  I do not charge VAT on my fees.  For more complicated or time-consuming matters the fee will be based on my hourly rate of £250 plus disbursements ( please see my terms and conditions of business in the Regulatory section of this website ).  The fee charged will include time spent on preliminary discussions, any drafting and preparation time, the making and receiving of telephone calls, correspondence written and received in all formats ( e.g. to check validity of documents), travel time if relevant, meeting with you,  due diligence checks , arranging for legalisation and complying with record keeping regulations.

Conclusion

Whether you're buying a property in Spain, setting up a subsidiary in Dubai, or just need a certified copy of your passport, a Notary Public in England can help you navigate the complexities of international documentation. For businesses, notarial services provide crucial verification and compliance tools in global operations. For individuals, they offer peace of mind that your personal documents are prepared correctly and accepted abroad.
